THE ONE WHERE I WAS PREGNANT 1991-1992: *Winfield Public School K-8 Library

I started my second year with the Winfield Public Schools in the fall of 1991. They still wanted me to work two full days Tuesday and Wednesday. My ½ day on Thursdays was 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM which meant I could no longer accept ½ day substitute jobs. It affected our income. After a while though I did not care because I found out that I was pregnant with our first child. Brad and I decided to see what it would be like income wise for us if I did not substitute on my days off. It would be nice to have two days home per week with our new baby. I’m glad we made that decision because my pregnancy was exhausting.

A gifted 6th grade class was added to my weird ½ day. I enjoyed working with these students as they were eager to learn. I used to walk them over to the Winfield public Library for some of my class sessions.

In the late spring it was announced that our Principal was not returning the next school year. It was under mysterious circumstances that he was leaving. I think he might have been fired? I was told that much of my library book budget had been withheld from our building the last two school years and could I do a $10,000 book order over the weekend? I did it and it was exhausting.

The schedule for the 1992-93 school year was announced in late May and they wanted me to come to Winfield EVERY DAY for ½ days! I was outraged! Now instead of 3 days a week of a 77 mile commute I would need to do so 5 days a week. I believe the Librarian that I job shared with was behind this schedule change. I think she proposed this idea behind my back to the powers that be knowing I would not like it, quit and she could get her job back. This was upsetting to me because I had really wanted to work part time to have time with our baby. I began looking for a new job. I applied and was hired for a full time Library Media Specialist position with USD 259. I was VERY pregnant when I interviewed. I was not fined for breaking my Winfield contract because I did so for financial hardship. Sure enough my job share partner slipped back into her full time job. It was a win-win for all involved.

In the summer a bad storm came through town that totaled Brad’s car. We had to buy a new car and this was an expense that did not come easy with my part time salary and a baby on the way.
I was excited about our son's birth on August 5th, 1992. I will be on maternity leave until mid September. I FINALLY got a Librarian position in the Wichita Public Schools. Look for my next blog entry entitled THE ONE WHERE I MET MY TWO BESTIES 1992-1993: Wichita Public Schools: Peterson K-5 Library July 17th. ENJOY!
