Part Time School Employees get taken advantage of.......... Brad and I were newly married and living in Derby which was sort of a halfway point between his fabulous new job at Project Bridge and mine in the Winfield Public Schools. I drove the 72 mile round trip Tuesday-Thursday. Do the math, I worked MORE than ½ of the contract days. When you are part time and work a Tuesday-Thursday combination you often will be working for about 10 extra days that you WILL NOT BE PAID FOR! Made me think that perhaps I should have looked into the USD 259 interview? My other observation was that not all the schools were equally staffed. My part time gig had the same number of weekly classes as another Librarian with a full time job at another Winfield Elementary School. This made no sense to me. I worked in two schools, Lowell K-6 and now closed country school K-8 whose name I can not remember. I had a wonderful Para who was the Assistant Superintendent's wife. She was so kind and motherly to me. I remember that her first name was Marty. I liked my classes at Lowell but did not LOVE the 6th graders. The country school was another story. Instead of an Administrator it had a head teacher. She was a bitter, newly divorced 40 something woman. She was hateful to all the Specials Teachers that traveled from Lowell to provide the teachers a plan break. I was shocked that I was expected to run a week-long book fair at the country school, it didn’t matter that my commute was 72 miles a day. This was asking too much of a part time employee. I did it though, what choice did I have? |
Book Character week: Amelia Bedelia |
As a district our Librarians would meet once a month. We were trying to advocate for equitability between all the library positions and the necessary software to automate our library book checkouts. We even addressed the school board. Nothing changed.

Book Character Week: The Cat In The Hat |
On Mondays and Fridays I would substitute teach mostly in Derby. I went to Rosehill once and the students were so disrespectful I refused to go back. One time I subbed for a Librarian at an Elementary School in Derby. When I looked around the Librarians desk I found no lesson plans or directions for running the library. Stuff like this pissed me off as it was often my experience as a substitute teacher. When I finished my day the Principal asked how things went. I told him it was challenging without lesson plans or procedures left behind for me. Apparently the Librarian got in trouble for what I said and turned the situation around to make it look like I was the one who did not see the very obviously placed lesson plans. She had lied! I no longer got called to substitute for any Librarian jobs in Derby. This incident left me wondering “This person has a full time job, and I don’t? I wonder if that lying Librarian lost her job when the Derby Public Schools decided to eliminate all but one district level Librarian jobs years later? Karma!

Back at Lowell teachers were not happy with our Administrator. I am not sure what was going on? I do know that the school board approved of all of our 6th graders moving up to the Middle School for their instruction, Good thing because I did not care for 6th graders.Brad and I enjoyed our summer break. I believe we went to Branson Missouri with Michelle and her family.
